New Year & More...

Well I finally managed to get the computer up and going after a near crash over the last week. Between finishing up work, holidays, and last minute shopping, it was a time crunch, but all is well now…

Looking forward to some family time back in CT for a long weekend…Some family get-togethers, some parties, and some fishing of course…

The rivers here have been locked up tight, so I’ve not thrown some line in a good while…

Anyways, looking ahead, we’re hoping you all have a safe and fun crash into The New Year, and we’re hoping for some big changes going into 2011…

Thanks for being a part of the craziness here!

A Quick Pick Me Up...

I'm not one typically excited about fly lines...but to have one designed for a quick draw seems pretty sweet...

RIO'S Saltwater Tropical OutBound Short (via about.com)

"This new line from RIO is an incredibly easy loading, fast casting line that gives anglers a huge advantage when targeting moving fish. With a short head of 30 ft and a short rear taper, the line loads a rod instantly and makes "one-shot" casts simple. The line is built with a hard, tropical coating to ensure the line will not wilt in any heat, and features a clear intermediate tip of 10 feet long and is ideal for permit and tarpon."

Weekly Update

It’s all fun and games until you don’t stick a fish…

That was the story of the day yesterday…

The last week has brought us over 20” of snow, and below freezing temps for days on end. With a one day reprieve on the temps and snow, Mike decided to make a last minute trip up on Friday to get some time on the water Saturday. The temps were supposed to get above 40 degrees, and with another 2 feet of snow forecasted in the coming week, we figured this may be the last opportunity for some fish in the coming months…

By 9AM, we had gotten to the stream out east, and hiked into the hole we’ve frequented over the years…we broke out the 3” shelf ice and waited for the slush to melt off…and waited…and waited…

Finally at noon, and with no sign of a let up, we decided to move onto another body of water for a last ditch effort at some fish. We found a semi empty parking lot and hiked into some open water and finished off the day drifting eggs and nymphs. The afternoon brought some murky conditions, as the mid day temps began to melt off a lot of the snow we had gotten…

Fingers crossed, the rivers won’t lock up, though it looks like between the swollen streams and low temps we’ll be tying flies for the next few months…

Here’s some of the scenery and shots from yesterday….

Weekly Update...

Well I have to apologize for the lack of posts. A mix of house selling crap, Christmas stuff, and work stuff has kept me off the PC at home most of the week. Of course that means the river as well…

Fish are happy as the rivers are finally full of water, and the temps have finally dropped. We’re expecting a foot of snow in the next 48 hours, so things are looking up.

Good news is that there should be a camera in our hands by the weeks end, which will make me VERY happy…

Will try to be better about posting in the coming week…

The Good Stuff!

Weekly Update

The weekend away had it’s ups and it’s downs…

Firstly, I got to spend some GREAT time with family…

That translates to no fish to hand for me. Hoever, there was some great times had…

Thursday I woke up to a fishless morning…

Friday was a wash…

Saturday was a last ditch effort for some LATE season bass. After a 3 hour paddle in a canoe, my father-in-law and I were able to bring up over 50 geese, 200 ducks, 2 beavers, and a portage over a beaver dam. While no fish, it was probably one of the greatest wildlife mornings I've had in a while!

While not much happened in CT…there is some good news…the rivers got rain, and will continue to get more rain for the next 36 hours! Game on boys…the wave of fish shall arrive soon!

Weekly Update

Well, we’re getting back to those slow weeks again…between the short days, and the holiday/travel preparations, there wasn’t much time in the cards this week. I did manage a few hours on a quickly dropping river on Saturday, but didn’t see a single fish. The stream was lower and clearer then I would’ve preferred, but it was nice to get out and pound a few holes before dark.

With the rains this week, I figured a fresh push of fish would’ve been kicking around…I’m sure they’re there…just we’re interested in my offerings…

Warm temps should disappear this week, and then it’s really time for the games to begin.

Traveling back home this weekend for turkey, which means we’ll be flinging dry flies for some trout back home!

This camera outage is really starting to blow…hopefully we get some good news this week…

Weekly Update - Fishy Trip Style...

Sorry it’s taken me a few days to catch up…still dealing with the misfortunes of last week…

So this last weekend was spent in Western NY doing a bit of fishing with Boz and some of his Maine Crew. I ended up arriving Thursday evening… the last to arrive…

I ended up having a few beers, and sleeping rather restlessly after seeing some of the great footage they had gotten on Thursday of the fishing. Many large fish were brought to hand…many more then reports had stated in the previous days…

Of course we were on the river bright and early Friday, and hopped into a spot down river from a bend that had been producing for the last several days. Greg was into the first fish we saw anyone land all day, but quickly had it spit the fly. Within 5 more minutes, he had tied into another beast, and managed to get it beached…

After some shots, and a video of the release, we were back to the water…Shortly after I had gotten my line back into the run, I managed to get schooled by what seemed like a rather large fish…

This was basically the story of my weekend…One small fish landed on Friday was the highlight of my fishing activities, though I will say that it was awesome seeing the guys work their magic…

Friday evening, started off rather quiet. There was some tying planned, until we realized that we were low on hooks. Figuring we could get into town before closing time to get some, we all jumped into the car, and in a rush of excitement, my camera made a crash landing on the tile floor…

FML…

Thank god for insurance…

So after getting into to town, our attempt to be closing time for the fly shops was unsuccessful. To kill some of the tying time, we decided to hop into one of the local watering holes for a brew before heading back home…or so we had thought…

Friday night turned into a bit of a tequila show…Thus Saturday was a bit of a later morning. After a broken camera, a few broken plates, a deep gash to a thumb (that should’ve taken stiches), and some puke, we were able to piece together most of the evening, which was a success on many levels…

Saturday we hit a few smaller tributaries for some sight fishing. With the weather being as warm and sunny as it was, our aim was to try and dodge the people at all costs (especially since we were all hungover). Fish were hard to come by, but once you found some holding in deeper pools, you were able to feed them flies.

We hit a few different pieces of water, and each hooked fish. Greg was able to get some GREAT footage on Saturday. After a bit of an early departure from the river, we prepped the house for heading out on Sunday, and were all beerless and asleep by 9PM, which speaks volumes for how we felt Saturday morning.

Sunday was another gorgeous day, so rather then spend 2 hours fighting fishermen, and struggling until the sun came up, we decided to just head out after getting the last of the laundry done. The river (along with all of the Great Lakes Tribs I crossed back to Cleveland) was low, so the fish were more concentrated in a few holes and bucket, making it hard to find fish on the main river without dealing with the crowds. I decided to just B-line it home to catch the Browns game.

Overall it was a great weekend...and I was able to accomplish my yearly goal of fly fishing new water in a new state…score!

Greg, Jeremy, Bruce, and Craig all managed to get into many different fish throughout the weekend despite my lack of fishiness, which was awesome to see. These for guys really humbled me with their ability to read drifts, lay line, and nymph up some rather large fish…Truly great fishermen! Looking forward to getting out with them in the future…

Video should be edited and up within the next few weeks...targeting between holidays...

Fishing In A Shit Storm....

Well, the first half of the week has been a complete shit storm...

After some consideration, and support from my lovely wife, i've decided to push off to NY on Thursday. I've got ALOT of loose ends to tie up before taking off, so this will be the last post of the week...

God willing, I'll be sharing photos and stories...

Weekly Update

The week was a bit slow for me. I could have swung some larger water here mid week, but some family obligations have kept me off of the water.

Fish are anxiously taking eggs and streamers, but finding the fish has been difficult. Low water this season still has most fish staging in the lake.

On the ponds, the bass are finishing up their foraging. A great opportunity to tie into some real giants looking to bulk up for a long winter...

Looking forward to a mid week departure for some chrome…tying till then…

Sad Sad Sad...

This last week, we as a community lost a dear friend...

Life is too precious to sit around and wait for ink to dry, and so I’m posting the unedited article here for everyone to read so that we may all gain a better appreciation for the man you may have been lucky enough to call 'friend'."

Weekly Update

Well, we’ve finally managed to dust off the steelhead gear, and throw a few streamers to some chrome. Schmidt made reservations early in the week for Casa De Page, and I managed to get the house/family stuff done to accommodate the 2 days…

Saturday was our day to shine, though there was some hard searching going on before we found success…

We started in PA, with little results. We ended up covering a few miles of water with only one fish even seen. Mike was able to coarse one drop back into a take, but that was the only action seen in PA.

We then trekked into OH, and started working our way west along some of the major OH tribs. Next stop was a “Because we’re going past it we should stop” section. Neither of us have ever seen or heard of a fish being taken from this stretch, but there was a small obligatory pull that made us get off the exit. We arrived to one car in the lot, and no people on the stretch. Considering that we left the PA lot with over 30 cars in it, there was some appeal to throw on the waders and at least take a swing or two.

As Mike chatted up the pair that was getting ready to leave, we found that they had walked well over 2 miles of water without seeing, feeling, or catching a single fish. For this trib, that’s quite unusual considering that clarity was perfect. As Mike was getting their locations, and where they had walked from, they started into “There’s no fish anywhere”…

“Fish” – I managed to tie into a LARGE chromer who took me for a ride and back.

After about 5 minutes of a fish running me up and down the pool, Mike was able to get the net over the largest steelie I’ve landed to date. Estimates are in the 12-13lb range. Not only was it a big fish, but it was a chrome, bright, pissed off fresh fish who was super pissed. That can only mean it was a great fight with a few scary moments…

As the two guys took off, we got come pics and released the fish. Mike then jumped into the run while I retied the leader…

BANG –

He’s into another pissed off fresh fish that was giving him and his switch rod a run for it’s money. Luckily I was able to manage a 3rd try with the net, and Mike was left shaking…

There were a few more stops, and a few more grabs, but the weekends high notes ended with those two fish. It was overall a successful weekend. Despite the temptations to tie on indie rigs, we both swung the entire weekend in considerably low conditions. We’re still looking for the big blow out to bring in the first good push of fish, but the season has started…

Hopefully the next week brings more action…

Weekly Update

Well the good news is that I haven’t forgotten to cast…

I finally managed a morning of casting in this last weekend in CT. Not a banner day, but I was able to pull a strike on a dry and land a fish on a nymph in less then ideal conditions…and only about 2 hours of fishing.

Things started before sun up and gave the run a go with some streamers early in hopes of coaxing a nice big breeder into a tango session…apparently the high water had different plans.

Nymphing ended up being the ticket, and a dry/dropper set up coaxed one small brookie strike…but user error meant no taker…

Next weekend should be epic if the rains come in just right, and Schmidt’s able to make the trek North!
