Steelheading: Week #20

Well the picture says it all:

There were few tracks...but also few fish. Not a sign of fish this afternoon but god it was great to be out...Especially with T-Conklin. It's been a while, so catching up on plans and cars was far more important...
It's been 49 days since I was on the water last, and man has it been bad...
I started with an indie and ended with a few swings. Nothing was taking but it's important to remember that the temps are still low, and that without a good warm-up...fish are still lethargic, and unwilling to take...
Anyways, I've got an empty house, a Dog who loves me, and a Honey Do List that isn't due for about 3 weeks...Game on boys...

Quote Of The Week...

With Amy Leaving In The AM....

"Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there,
I've got a bite"

Steelheading: Week #19

OK…there’s light at the end of the tunnel…water is flowing in the tributaries, people are fishing…the temps are rising…

Things are looking a lot better. At the moment, none of the major rivers are fishing, however many of the smaller tributaries are holding fish. Many of the fish, from what I’m gathering, are older beat up fish. The rivers have only been open for about a week or so, and with ice still on the lake, it’s doubtful that large pushes of fish will begin for some time….

HOWEVER, it doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy the fruits that do venture into the systems. As normal, with cloudy, cold water, the bright eggs have been the tickets…but soon it will be straight swinging for this fly flinger. As I finish up the winter home fixins, I’m looking forward to some time on the water next weekend…

The wife is taking advantage of opportunities back home in CT for the next several weeks, so yours truly (along with my side kick Finn), will have the house to ourselves, and time to burn on the river. Game on…Spring time is here!

Quote of the Week:

"I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

BOZ's action...

You'll remember Greg's first bonefish was up for Moldy Chum's SOTM (Slob Of The Month)...

Well we've found the footage, and lets be clear that you'll want to leave your job and move south once you're done...

ENJOY!!!

Steelheading: Week #18...

Well after a little Home Depot today, we ran by the river to see how our warm up was coming along on the rivers. Things looked like an ugly mud slide with crushed ice...

The rivers are finally starting to open, and should hopefully blow out come this week. There's an outside chance of a Valentines day chromer for me, but we'll see what the fish gods & wife say to that.

Either way, I'm getting all the house chores out of the way so that when the thaw does start up, I'm here to enjoy. Anyways, since there's no fish porn, I'll offer up a little other...

Why TMT Doesn't Ice Fish...

I prayed for well being...but you'd never see me checking out the scene...

"OAK HARBOR, Ohio - A miles-wide ice floe broke away Saturday from Lake Erie's shoreline, trapping 135 ice fishermen, one of whom fell into the water and later died. A local sheriff called the fishermen's actions — given warming temperatures and the fragile ice — "idiotic.""

Quote Of The Week

"I fish because I love to; Because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; Because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape; Because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; Because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; Because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don’t want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters; Because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness;
Because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there; Because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; And, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly so much fun."

Video Of The Day...

Nothing like videos to help the fix...FLIES & FINS takes the cake with this one...

We'll take it...

"In the last weeks in office, the Bush administration rushed ahead to sell oil and gas leases near some of our nation's most precious landscapes in Utah," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters. "“We need to responsibly develop our oil and gas supplies to help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but we must do so in a thoughtful and balanced way that allows us to protect our signature landscapes and cultural resources."

Main Article From Ted Williams...

"Dear [name]: We need to generate revenue, so we searched hard and long for a guest of honor who would fill the room at our spring meeting. Finally, we hit upon Dick Cheney, arguably the most dangerous enemy of fish in our generation. What's more, Mr. Cheney, who angles for trout in Wyoming in one of the rivers he hasn't ruined with gas and oil extraction (which happens to run through his ranch) is an accomplished and safe fly caster. In fact, he hasn't wounded even one of his fishing companions."

Steelheading: Week #17 (This Ice Shit Is Getting Old)

Well again…the rivers are nothing more then useless…so I decided to trade in the fly rod for a little baitcasting…

That’s right…Ohh yeah, and I caught a 16lb 2oz “Big One” also…Check it out…

Finn's practicing his fishing with me

Yeah, incase you couldn’t tell, cabin fever is really setting in…Thanks to Dad and Ann for the early birthday gift…I think they were getting tired of the “if only the rivers weren’t frozen” lines…

Game overall is fun…something to do when there’s nothing else going on…I’ve managed to come in first in my last 8 tournaments, and have pulled countless 10+ lb fish…ok, enough with the pretend reports…

Anyways, hope all are enjoying the game…
