QUOTE OF THE WEEK - EARLY FOR A CHANGE!

"THIS OLD HOUSE IS MOANING
AND THIS OLD HOUSE IS GROANING
AS THE NIGHT WIND ROARS WITH A RAGE
AND THAT PERFECT STORM PASSES
AND THE SUN COMES OUT
AND THE BOYS ARE OUT CATCHING THEIR WAVES

ICICLES ARE SHEDDING THEIR TEARS OF SPRING
THE GULLS ARE LAUGHING AND THEY’RE SPREADING THEIR WINGS
TOURISTS ARE PLANNING FOR THE SUMMER TO START
WAITING TO BREAK THE HEART, OF THIS TOWN"

I Remember Those Opening Days...

via midcurrent...

OPENING DAY on the Farmington back in CT...

"The scene is surreal. Fishermen line up on the rocky banks of the river, facing their fellow anglers, sporting waders in the river, 20 yards away. If they were wielding muskets instead of fishing rods, it would look like a Revolutionary War battle."

Steelheading: Week #29 (Last Week For Me...)

We'll start off by saying that it was a great year, and it sad to see it come to a close...however all good things do come to an end. With the temps not dropping below 70 in the last 48 hours, and river temps rising, the first have begun their slow migration out of the rivers.

After Potter last weekend, the rains came and brought the rivers up...leaving them in prime condition Friday. It was a gorgeous day well into the 80's, so we were fishing in teeshirts and waders rolled down. We each managed a few grabs, but most had the subtle feel of smallmouth rather then chromers. We fished until the dark set in but didn't see much movement from the fish. Nothing pushing or porpousing.

With Justin leaving for the Vinyard on Sunday, Saturday was his last time to fish for steelhead, and our last time to fish together for a while. I picked him up early from the shop and we hiked up river on a HOT sticky afternoon. I won't dance around it...the fishing blew. I had one take in a tailout...in over 5 hours of fishing. Justin got 2 grabs all day, and finally, in the last run of the day, well into the darkness, managed his last steelhead of the season.

One fish all weekend...we took a few pictures...

Again...a great year, and may not be entirely over...but the last serious fishing for me is done. Now I'll focus on house things for a few weeks before settling into a bass season with Jimmy again. We wish Justin well in the Vinyard, and very well maybe taking him up on his invite to go fish the Derby.

For now, this is the end...

Dries

Why you're fly box is empty without Parachute Adams. Good thing I had them in PA for my only trout of the weekend...

"Some fly-fishers have known for months which fly they’ll tie on when they encounter their first rising trout of 2009. They expect the first mayflies of the season to swim to the surface of the streams and wriggle free of their exoskeletons to be little Blue Winged Olives or Blue Quills, or maybe the bigger, meatier Hendricksons, and they’ll have the appropriate pattern ready to go."

Talked with a few others from the weekend. Looks like the fishing was slow all the way around. Some people stayed and fished all day Sunday with a fish or two to show for it. Something was amiss with the fishing this weekend, and considering the stories we heard, we were happy with our results. Again, overall a great weekend, and wonderful company.
We shall be back soon my dear old friend!

POTTER COUNTY REPORT - STEELHEAD WHAT?!

Great Food, Great Company, Great Weather…Shitty Fishing…

Not sure if fewer stocked fish made it a tough weekend, or the unseasonably warm weather, but it was difficult pulling fish from “God’s Country”. We all managed fish, however the numbers certainly weren’t what we expected. All other anglers concurred, but had no real solid reasons why…even the veterans.

Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails were the ticket for most fish taken though. All in all a great weekend. My only two fish came on dries, which made them worth it. Also, getting Mike into his first Palamino, and Jimmy into his first trout ever on a fly rod topped off the weekend. Some good stories shared and made, not to mention the over stuffed people that walked out of the lodge… I’ll let some of the pictures do the talking…

Steelheading: Week #27

Well the weekend was spent with Amy and family...but Sunday I was able to coax Justin into a little late afternoon action. Fish were moving and a few takers, but you had to search for them. First location proved fishless, however we later swung into some smallmouth and soon after steelhead. Justin had the fish of the day (first fish pictured). A spawned out dropback that was L-O-N-G. Second fish worked him well. Overall a great Easter and nice to be on the water with good company.

Quote Of The Week

Amy's visit brings us the quote of the week...

Since she's been out of town in training, I've taken the living room as an area to tie flies, rig rods etc. I guess the flashabou and dubbing have gotten to be a bit much...

"I'm going to vacuum the shit out of this room tomorrow"

After seeing what condition the bench is in, you can see why I've moved to the living room...

Steelheading: Week #26

Well the rain put a damper on the good fishing we've been privledged to have. Thursday turned out to be the best fishing day of the week, with the rivers littered with fresh fish. Friday the heavens came down and kept Mike in Columbus on Saturday. We rescheduled for Sunday and headed to the far east corner of Steelhead Alley. We fished all day in great conditions, but to our surprise found few fish holding. The crowds moved us further east along the tribs, but not before Mike found a fresh skipper willing to take a streamer swung through a small hole. I missed one hot chromer that jumped and worked me before we headed off. It turned out to be a bit of a dissapointing day on the water, however we were able to salvage it with some great photography, and some exploring what changes the rivers had on our home waters...
